Ebook About
This moving and unforgettable memoir of a transgender pastor’s transition from male to female is an “audacious, gripping, and profoundly real journey that speaks to the mind, heart, and soul” (Joshua J. Dickson, director of Faith Based Initiatives, Biden Campaign)—perfect for fans of Redefining Realness and There Is Room for You.As a father of three, married to a wonderful woman, and holding several prominent jobs within the Christian community, Dr. Paula Stone Williams made the life-changing decision to physically transition from male to female at the age of sixty. Almost instantly, her power and influence in the evangelical world disappeared and her family had to grapple with intense feelings of loss and confusion. Feeling utterly alone after being expelled from the evangelical churches she had once spearheaded, Paula struggled to create a new safe space for herself where she could reconcile her faith, her identity, and her desire to be a leader. Much to her surprise, the key to her new career as a woman came with a deeper awareness of the inequities she had overlooked before her transition. Where her opinions were once celebrated and amplified, now she found herself sidelined and ignored. New questions emerged. Why are women’s opinions devalued in favor of men’s? Why does love and intimacy feel so different? And, was it possible to find a new spirituality in her own image? In As a Woman, Paula’s “critical questions about gender, personhood, and place are relevant to anyone. Her writing insightfully reveals aspects of our gender socialization and culture that often go unexamined, but that need to be talked about, challenged, and changed” (Soraya Chemaly, author of Rage Becomes Her) in order to fully understand what it means to be male, female, and simply, human.

Book As a Woman: What I Learned about Power, Sex, and the Patriarchy after I Transitioned Review :

After an interview on NPR, I immediately ordered this book--sad to say, I realized in Chapter 1 that I disliked the author! All she does is brag, boast, and list her creds.. Repeatedly and endlessly. If I had to read the # of times she was on TedTalk and the size of the audience listeningone more time, I would scream! Her story is not about male or female...it's all about him and then her.
“As A Woman: What I learned About Power, Sex, and Patriarchy After I Transitioned” (2021) is a profound and powerful, deeply inspiring and beautifully written memoir written by Reverend Paula Stone Williams (1951-). In addition to being a transgender person, the main focus of her life centered around evangelical Christianity where she worked with the (seed) Orchard Group that created the “mega church” across America. Little did Paula know that after her announcement to transition (2014) from male to female, she would be fired and lose her career within the church during a period of seven days!Paula has attained the highest level in psychological education earning a Ph.D. in pastoral counseling. Paula’s wife Cathy was very supportive of her transitioning and both were in agreement to keep matters confidential until a change in her appearance became undeniably obvious. Neither one wanted to unnecessarily disrupt the lives of their three adult children and their families, or compromise their position or livelihood in the evangelical church. In his remarkable memoir, “She’s My Dad: A Father’s Transition and a Son’s Redemption” (2018) Jonathan S. Williams shares his journey of love, family, and acceptance. As a pastor, Paula writes of gender inequality with the unique perspective of having experienced male privilege and having her position in her work place automatically diminished as a woman. Women are half of the work force yet not earning the same pay, allowed similar consideration, credit for suggestions, or equal respect given to men etc. The second shift begins when women get home to care for their homes and families, and are more likely to experience burn-out, as men automatically have more leisure time. When one of Paula’s therapists felt that she would never pass as a woman, she was crushed. However, when she began HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) the change in her appearance was more rapid than expected. Paula writes almost lyrically and beautifully of spirituality and intimacy comparing the powerful visual charge sparking male desire to the lasting emotional connection of feminine softness and intuition. It was unfortunate and very sad that Paula and Cathy’s marriage of over forty years seemed to falter downward, though the levels of therapy were extensive and greater than most couples. This book is among the best written books to date covering transgender family life and experience: “To all who believe the call toward authenticity is scared and holy and for the greater good…” ~ Paula Stone Williams.
